My clients wanted easy, efficient access to the items they would be using on a daily basis, such as their cookware, cooking utensils, and spices. Their kitchen had a traditional ventilation hood above the range, eliminating any potential storage in that space. With all the drawers adjacent to the range dedicated to storing utensils, my clients still needed a convenient place to house their spice collection. My cabinetmaker, Cameron Luff, and I came up with the idea of pullout pilasters flanking the range.
We cut in half with a tablesaw the same knotty-alder legs we had used for the kitchen island. After finishing them, we installed Rev-A-Shelf’s 3-in. base filler with ball-bearing slides onto the cabinet carcase. This product allowed us to mount the pilaster 1/4 in. above the finished floor, preventing the cabinet from scraping it. This solution has ended up as one of the main focal points of the kitchen.
