What Went Wrong?
Since this video came to me via e-mail, it’s not clear where or when it was taken. What is perfectly clear, however, is how quickly things can go drastically wrong, even when it seems like normal precautions and preparations are taken. Hopefully the crane operator survived the incident with no more than a riveting tale to tell.

Crane accident New Zealand, 200-ton Terex - All Terrain crane, set up on a river bank lifting the second beam of the new Huruhuru Cycleway bridge into place. As the ground starts to give way, the outrigger pads sink, and THAR SHE GOES!!! Amazing no one stopped this lift before the accident...plenty of clues indicating what was about to happen. No further info.
From the moment this video started it was obvious to everyone that the ground underneath was not stable. Unfortunately I'm not able to tell how far the structural member had already been moved before the video started to know if the workers were proceeding with the lift as fast as possible, or if they were trying to return the structure to the original position also as fast as possible! In any event the workers were in a jam that they could not get out of fast enough.
