When I have to work on a porch fascia, I fasten a row of 2xs to the face of the columns (about 12 in. down from the top). This arrangement makes it possible to set up a ladder anywhere along the front of the porch while keeping the top rungs from interfering with the work. I typically fasten the 2xs with 3-in. screws. But if the finished surface of the columns must be protected, I use screw clamps instead.

Great idea, but I don't like putting holes in trim unless it has not been finished yet.
