Master Carpenter Series: Wood and Slate Basket-Weave Floor
Custom builder Sean Flynn shows exactly how to build this intricate entry-hall floor
Showing off. We all do it. It seems that on the jobsite it always increases productivity and quality when you set two trimmers on the same task in different rooms. We just like to show off our skills and yes, maybe one up each other.
One of the places builder Sean Flynn of Bristol VT decided to ratchet things up was in the entry to his house.
He says, “In all of my favorite projects the entry is that space that most sets the tone for the rest of the house. A little extra attention to detail here can go a long way towards drawing your visitor’s eye in the direction of some of the other little details where you have chosen to flaunt your skills.”
In the case of his entryway he decided to borrow a concept from a previous project his company did with Gregor Masefield of Studio III Architects of Bristol VT. On that project, he used strips of the wood flooring that runs through the rest of the house and the tile from the mudroom and adjacent bathroom to create a woven grid of tile and wood. If executed well this detail can seamlessly blend the dissimilar materials and welcome you through to the spaces within.
