If you need to use a hole saw to bore a hole in a piece of wood, you could get that plug out the old-fashioned way with a screwdriver or a chisel and some choice words, but there’s a better way.
Ray Brown from Polebridge, MT, uses a drill and a drill-driver to make this job much easier. Here’s how he does it.
Start by drilling two small holes on either side of the hole saw’s pilot bit; this is a very important part-you don’t want to skip this. Now we’re going to run a couple of screws into the holes we just drilled. And the reason we drilled the holes first is because, if we didn’t, the screws we’re driving in would act like wedges. That would simply embed the plug even more. So what happens here is, once these screws start to bottom out on the inside of the hole saw, they start to push against the hole saw. And as they do, they lift the plug out. Bang. done. Thanks, Ray. Great tip.
