The National Association of Home Builders says that the number of metropolitan areas in 49 states and the District of Columbia on the NAHB/First American Improving Markets Index declined by eight from July to August, but that the total of 247 is three times what it was a year ago.
The index lists metro areas that have shown gains in housing permits, employment, and house prices for at least six consecutive months. You can read the full NAHB statement here. The three new markets making it onto the list were Kankakee, Ill., Atlantic City, N.J., and Ocean City, N.J. Eleven others were dropped.
NAHB Chairman Rick Judson said in a prepared statement, “The pace of improvement is being hampered somewhat by challenges that builders and buyers are experiencing with regard to the availability of credit, materials, lots for development and labor.” But Judson said the 244 metro markets that remained on the list were a sign of continued improvements in the housing industry.
A full list of the metro markets on the improving list is available at NAHB’s website.
