Project House: Wood-Floor Repair, Ep. 1 – Introduction
Justin travels to Orlando, Florida, to see how a restoration expert patches an old wood floor
When Fine Homebuilding editor Justin Fink meets with restoration expert Scott Sidler, he learns that you can’t just go to the lumber yard, buy red oak, patch a hundred-year-old floor, and expect it to look good. Scott tells him about old vs. new growth lumber, pointing out the differences in grain patterns and seasonal movement. He then walks Justin through the process of removing an old heating grate, inspecting the opening left in the floor, then framing it in with 2x4s and 3/4 inch plywood in anticipation of the replacement boards.
