If you need to cut a round hole in a ceiling for a light fixture but you don’t have a compass, you could just hack away at the drywall until your electrical box fits, but there’s a better way.
Brian Everest from Nelson, B.C., knows how to put together an emergency compass. Here’s what you need: a Sawzall blade, a drywall screw, a way to put the screw in, and a pencil. I’m going to run the screw through the hole in the tang of our blade and drive it into the ceiling where I want the center of my hole. Then all I have to do is put my pencil point in the tooth on the blade that matches the radius of the hole we need to cut, rotate the blade around the screw with the pencil in that tooth, and I’ve got my cut line.
That’s a great tip, Brian. Thank you for sending it to us.
