Lee Valley High-Tech Chisel Roll
Combines polyester and Kevlar into a single piece of fabric
It may not have the history and character of my 15-year-old homemade leather tool roll, but Lee Valley’s chisel roll may be the future of durability. Made by a Canadian company that has developed a method of combining different yarns into the same swath of fabric, the chisel roll combines polyester and Kevlar into a single piece of fabric, without any seams.
I’ve been using this roll to carry my day-to-day chisels for the last couple of months, and despite being thrown from truck to toolbox to workbench on a daily basis, it has shown no sign of wear so far, and my chisels are still razor sharp. The roll holds seven chisels, and the company says that it will work for tools . It works great for my old set of Marples Blue Chips, but some of my butt chisels, Japanese chisels, and longer paring chisels either don’t fit or are too short for their cutting edges to reach the Kevlar portion of the fabric. I hope that if the tool roll is successful, Lee Valley will offer it in a few different sizes, especially so that I have a home for my longer chisels or maybe some files and rasps. Despite a pretty steep price ($49), and being complete overkill for a chisel roll, this is a cool futuristic product that does a great job of protecting some of my favorite and most-used tools.
