Dusk is a magical time to photograph exteriors of houses, but it can be tricky to get the timing right. To capture this stunning modern addition to a classic bungalow in Boise, ID, I set this shot up roughly 30 minutes before the sun went down. My assistant went to every room in the house to turned on all the lights and then added a couple tungsten lights to brighten some of darker rooms. Then we waited… as the sun goes down the sky turns to blue and there’s this magic point when the exterior and interior are the same light level. That’s when you shoot. And you only have 5 minutes or so before it gets too dark so you have to be ready.
A special shot that happens technically happens twice a day, but you’d have to be up long before the sunrise. Not fun if you’re not a morning person like me.
