Capturing a good glow from a fireplace actually requires very little fire. I usually light a few pieces of paper under the wood and do a long exposure to capture them as they flame up. If you let the fire get good and hot, it will blow out or look super intense when you shoot anything over a second. The nice thing about using little fires for your shots is that you can put them out quickly and try again if the fire just doesn’t look right.
