This pioneer sod house built near Ash Hollow, Nebraska still stands after so many years and reminds us of the ingenuity of our forebears. With little or no timber to use for house construction these pioneers used the material at hand, namely the sod under their feet. Building as if with bricks they stacked the sod pieces on top of each other, forming forming thick walls that provided protection from the elements. This one stands not far from the historic Oregon trail in western Nebraska, with wagon wheel ruts still visible in the rugged terrain.
