If you build decks you need to keep up with the building code and best practices. One of the best ways to build your knowledge base and keep current is to attend a free 6 hour course titled “Deck and Porch Framing Connection Seminar” presented by Jim Mailey of Simpson Strong Tie.
The course covers the structural code provisions in the IRC, IBC and other building standards that address decks and offers appropriate solutions for critical connections. Jim draws on company resources as well as others published by AF&PA, ASCE and AWC so attendees get a well rounded understanding of deck structural issues and solutions.
Six hours for a class on deck framing connections may sound like a long time but it’s fast-paced. I’ve attended the class 3 times; the first when deck construction was just a one hour portion of a general structural load-path workshop. Again about five years ago when the class was about 3 hours long and the most recent about a year ago for the full 6 hour version. Jim updates the course regularly and keeps it up-to-date with the current model code provisions.

I attended one of Jim's conferences a few years back. It was well worth the 30 mile drive through the snow. Really.
