Mounting heavy items such as flat-screen TVs, shelf standards, or cabinets on gypsum-board walls can be problematic. As the object is tightened to the wall, the drywall can be crushed. Now there’s an easy solution: Veritas’s Drywall Nuts. These shouldered inserts are available in 1/2-in. and 5/8-in. thicknesses to match the most common drywall sizes. The insert is screwed into the framing by coarse external threads on one end of the fastener. You can drive the fastener with either a straight screwdriver or an insert nut driver, also sold by Veritas ($11). The exposed end of the fastener has an internal thread for either a 1/4-in. or 5/16-in. bolt or machine screw, depending on the version. The 1/4-in. size (about $5 each) can withstand up to 450 lb. of shear load and 350 lb. of tension. The 5/16-in. size boosts shear to 700 lb. (the tension remains at 350 lb.).
