The owners of a house on Lake Champlain approached their architect about wanting to build a two car garage addition with a living space above. The problem was that their house was nestled in between the lake’s shoreline and a fifteen foot rock face. The only place the garage would have fit was between the rocks and their home’s entry area, which needed to remain exactly where it was. Since the space between the garage and the existing home was tight, the architect created a six foot wide slot of interior space between the two. The east wall of it was curved, moving people from the new front door to the original entry area while gently easing them into the main house. The curved wall, constructed of cherry panels and maple accents, recalls the waves of the lake and made space for a new closet behind it. The floor is Vermont slate, and the original wainscoting milled from the camp’s original boards was paired with new wainscoting in order to match the finishes and blur the lines between old and new.
