Q:
I plan to build on a waterfront lot that is over an acre in size but only 115 ft. wide. There is a steep grade from the road to the building area, and the ground has yet to be cleared. Should the driveway be installed before or after the location of the septic system is determined?

A:
Editorial Advisor Mike Guertin replies: Before breaking ground, have a site plan developed by an engineer who specializes in site work or by a land surveyor. The site plan will take into consideration setback distances, topography, and other issues, avoiding conflicts on the narrow property that could possibly require rerouting the driveway or repositioning the septic tank and/or leach field. Walking the property with the engineer or surveyor will provide an opportunity to discuss options.
