A homemade carpenter’s stool is really handy if you’re doing work up high, like installing crown molding or nailing off casings, but there’s only one problem with a regular step stool–it has the tendency to tip over if you stand too close to one of its edges. You could climb on the stool and tell yourself to be extremely careful, but there’s a better way.
John Lockwood submitted this tip and his version of the common step stool consists of a stool that has splayed legs that are positioned 90 degrees to each other so that it can never tip over.

The reason it is stable and can't tip over is, of course, because your weight will always be within the area formed by the four floor contact points.
Nice idea, BUT there are 4 corners that don't have the 'splay'...make sure your liability Ins. is paid up!
Easier (for a wood worker) would be a sturdy top with 4 splayed' legs that were splayed in two directions!!!!
