The Cape Cod style house originated in New England in the 17th century as a response to the harsh winter weather normally found there. Generally simple in design and usually built with one and a half stories featuring a central chimney, they were comparatively easy to build and heat. The Cape has become an iconic American house style with variations and even a revival style that included dormers and other features that were not found on the earlier examples. This particular Cape in Harpswell, Maine is exceptional and features many of the essential elements of the original Cape Cod style, including central chimney, symmetrical front window placement, little or no exterior ornamentation and a very nice attached barn and porch on the gable end. It looks as good today as it may have looked two hundred years ago, affirming that good design never goes out of style….
