A Kitchen Counter Offers a Solution
A modest proposal to eliminate the typical unsightly and ineffective drain board.
Thoughtful design and careful production of this kitchen counter solves a nagging problem in most kitchens. By having permanent groves in the counter to drain the drying rack’s water back to the sink, the typical unsightly and ineffective drain board is eliminated — an elegant solution.

No dishwasher?
What type of stone is the countertop? Are those cabinets custom? If not, what is the name of the manufacturer?
How wide and what shape should the groves be to keep them easy to clean?
How worried do you have to be about your dish rack falling into the groves?
As unsightly as they are drain boards are at least replaceable.
Those are gigantic furrows in an otherwise attractive counter.
The picture suggests another problem is looming -- a slight bit of movement will knock the drying rack into the groove.
This might be a good idea, but I would want a lot of positive reports before risking an expensive replacement.
As for the comment about having a dishwasher... the larger the kitchen, the more likely that the cook uses things too large or unsuitable for the dishwasher. Copper-botttom pans, cast iron (enameled and plain), knives, wooden handles, wine glasses, etc all need to be hand washed and put out to dry.
As long as you polish the furrows the water will drain and clean up will be easy. I like the idea, wide furrows would be easier to clean. The recessed sink is the only way to go.
