Sharpening Utility-Knife Blades
A new use for everyday kitchen honing steel.
I’ve been using my utility knife to cut paper, thick fabric, Styrofoam, and other materials that dull the blade but not enough so that I have to break off a segment. I discovered that I can give one of these slightly dull blades some new life by using the same honing steel that I use for my kitchen knives.

this is a great hint - and if you do not have your butcher steel handy, the matte edge of your vehicle door glass will work, and the bar non-glazed ceramic edge of a toilet tank will do a good substitute for a fine sharpening stone...

Along the lines of Gord's comment I have used the bottom edge of a ceramic coffee mug in a pinch as a knife sharpener.
