Garage Door
Balancing price and honoring the original door design — a compromise.
Mike Maines illustrated an attractive garage door. I was a bit shocked when pricing it out. To match the design would be a fully custom door in the $6000 to $7000 price range. A couple of semi-custom quotes with a similar design were close to $5000 — budget-busting numbers; so I drilled down on alternatives. One company was able to semi-customize the door in a 3 vertical panel design. Though not exactly what Mike showed on the plans it was similar and seemed a reasonable compromise between price and honoring the design.
It took four weeks from deposit to installation. Though the CTE students, Bruce, and I have been doing all of the work not requiring a license (plumbing, mechanical), the garage door installation is one task that we left to the supplier’s crew. We’ve installed garage doors in the past but we aren’t proficient at it. What took the supplier’s two-person crew one hour likely would have taken us three.

Hi, I have a question. The garage doors market today is laced with many low-cost garage doors. While this may seem worth it, there is more than what meets the eye. Low-price garage doors offer poor insulation, sub-standard controls and no safety measures. Is it so?
