Although it sometimes gets a bad rap by general contractors and tile contractors alike, it sometimes makes a lot of sense to tile over previously tiled surfaces. Custom Building Products’ Multi Surface Bonding Primer is a water-based primer that’s rolled onto the existing surface with a 3/8-in. nap roller. Once it’s dry, you can tile over it using a polymer-modified thinset mortar. It even works on porcelain, according to the rep I spoke with.
