The homeowners were looking for a full-service company to build a custom, high-efficiency new home with minimal exterior maintenance. In order to achieve this request, the products used were split-faced concrete block and natural cedar siding, both of which require zero maintenance. The big picture window was salvaged by the homeowner from an abandoned warehouse in Rhode Island. A black trim band travels 360 degrees around the building which was critical in achieving the look the architect envisioned. The detail at the drip edge where the soffit dives into the roof plane, eliminating any fascia, is a favorite part of the house as well as one of the most difficult pieces of the building process. The challenge was framing the two points coming together when there was very little room for error. To adhere to the energy standards of Efficiency Vermont, other features were included such as interior, finished concrete floors and a cutting-edge, wood-fired boiler system.
