Cottages on the Channel
A modest form of massed seaside architecture makes for a striking image.
A few years ago my wife and I went to England for Christmas, and we had a wonderful time. Starting in London, we went on to Cambridge and eventually ended up in a town called Southwold, on the English Channel in East Anglia. There we discovered this row of tiny beach cottages lining the water, all closed up for winter. Built closely together, they didn’t differ much in style except for an occasional change in color or roof shingles. Each one had a simple front porch, one front and one rear window. They represented a very modest form of seaside architecture, but the massing of them along the Channel shore made for an interesting photograph. A long abandoned and disintegrating pier jutted out into the water. As I was shooting this image, a family came by in their winter coats and added some life to an otherwise unpopulated beach. In the summer, this scene would be jammed with people looking to enjoy the summer warmth, but in the winter, it’s very quiet …
