The House That Parson Fisher Built
This 1814 house was built by a remarkable man of many talents — artist, inventor, scientist, builder, and minister.
Jonathan Fisher — or Parson Fisher, as he was respectfully known in his Blue Hill, Maine, community — was a fascinating man who built this house for himself and his family in 1814. Brilliant and extremely talented, he was an accomplished artist, inventor, scientist, man of letters, and congregational minister. He could also design and build stuff. His house, shown here, is beautifully preserved in Blue Hill and shows off his aesthetic and building skills. The pine paneling inside the house has taken on a honey colored patina and looks as good today as when it was built. Structural details are revealed in the attic and the simple and austere exterior gleams in the sun with the yellow color that Fisher created himself by blending ochre found on the site into the paint. A renaissance man indeed!
