When I came to do this kitchen shoot and saw photos of what it looked like before construction, I couldn’t get my bearings—there was a big wall that separated the space into two small rooms and another wall with bookshelves separating these rooms from the living and dining area. The design team took walls down, created an opening in the bookcase, built a custom island with a maple butcher-block top for cooking prep, and installed Jet Mist leathered granite on the countertops. When styling the room we brought in a maple dollhouse that belongs to the homeowner’s young daughter and some picture books. Everything says family, cooking, and time for play—a good reminder to everyone of the important things in life.
