A Russian Banya
Strategically placed windows allow views of a lake while keeping the sauna experience private.
The owners of this camp are Russian, and in Russian culture, having a beautiful banya — a “public bathhouse” — is a source of pride. The owners wanted a banya to which they could bring family and friends to enjoy while not losing sight of the beauty of lake close by. The windows were strategically placed in locations to see the views of the water while also keeping the banya experience private. In this image, there are windows above the couch facing the lake. Because the footprint of the original garage had to stay the same, space was added by creating a sleeping loft for anyone staying the night.
