How to Transfer Hinge Locations to a Replacement Door
Learn tips for making accurate measurements so that a new door fits and swings perfectly.
When fitting a new door slab to an old jamb, laying out the hinge locations is critical to the door’s operation.
One way to do this is to temporarily set the new door slab in the opening, and use shims to hold it in place. Adjust the shims as needed to create an even reveal on the top and sides. Then, mark the top and bottom of each hinge location on the new slab, remove the door, and use a square to extend the lines across the edge.
Finally, use your square or a straight rule to measure how far the hinges are set into the jamb, and transfer that measurement to the door. If your hinges are rounded, align the door side of the hinge with the marks, and trace it to complete the layout.
