Podcast Episode 98 — How Good Is Good Enough?
Framing, windows, workshop flooring, roof vents, and more.
Justin, Rob, and Brian tackle reader feedback in this episode of the FHB Podcast, starting with Instagram response to our Golden Rules of Framing, and especially to the follow-up “rules” submitted to us by framing expert John Spier. The guys talk about one particular social media post that generated a lot of heat: what are the tolerances you shoot for, and how good is good enough? Plus, social media sure is something else, amirite?
Listener Doug asks about windows, specifically those for those for new construction (left) vs. replacement/insert (right).
The guys also talk about energy efficiency for replacement windows.
Listener Barton says, “I very much enjoyed Justin’s appearance on Shop Talk Live #153.” After the obvious flattery, Barton asks about workshop floors, and floors and subflooring in general.
Finally, Ben has questions about roof venting, since he has a LOT of them on his house!

Great podcast !
Framing experience: Perhaps only 2-3 windows in my townhome are square. The remaining windows are too short and/or have sills which, although they're properly sloped downward, do not sit flush with the bottom sash. Needless to say for the past 15 yrs we've had leaky windows. For the worst offenders I did squeeze rigid foams between the sash and interior trim. Purchased the home as new construction, the tract builder was unable remedy the problem and it fell outside their "warranty". *shrug*
As a homeowner, who has interest in residential construction and enjoys walking through sites, I see a lot of wall studs which are not coplanar and a lot of nailing misses.
Very much enjoyed podcast 98. It immediately reminded me of Larry Haun’s FHB article of October 20
Oops—submitted prematurely. Larry Haun’s FHb article of October 2003, 10 Rules for Framing. Rule No 2 is Build a house not furniture (know your tolerances). He even give some specifics for when you have to be exact, e.g. bottom sole plate: no; top sole plate: yes. It’s saved to iBooks on my phone!
