The historic Skolfield Whittier House in Brunswick, Maine, is worth a visit. Largely intact and undisturbed since it was last used as a residence in 1925, the house stands today as a museum and fascinating window into Maine’s architectural heritage. Built in 1858, the house is an Italianate-style duplex and is in beautiful condition; it was given to the Pejepscot Historical Society by the last owners. The pantry still contains the seasonings and accoutrements needed for a well-stocked pantry of the era. The wood has taken on a lovely patina, and the space invites one to step in and explore. The entire house consists of beautiful and historically significant furniture, fireplace surrounds and stained glass windows that rival the pantry as fascinating doorways into the past.
