The complex and elaborate detailing of Queen Anne architecture is illustrated in this shot I did from the roof of the Hartley Lord Mansion in Kennebunk, Maine. Designed by architect George Meacham and built in 1885, the house is a good example of the Victorian genre. From the decorative urns on the balustrade to the complicated and highly detailed French Mansard roof on the carriage house below, the extravagant nature of this architectural style is clearly demonstrated in this house. The complexities of Victorian architecture created maintenance issues and led to a relatively short lived chapter in architectural history, although many who love old houses still have an active interest in the style.
