Scissors on the Job Site
Cutting housewrap and underlayment with scissors, faster and safer than with a knife.
I gave up using a knife in favor of scissors. You have to be very careful using a knife not to slice through the rest of the material when cutting off a roll. And a knife risks cutting whatever is beneath the material when making field cuts. I’ve found scissors less risky for making cuts, and better yet, they’re faster.
And once you have scissors in your tool kit you’ll find them handy for all sorts of things — cutting cords, opening packaging, cutting through shrinkwrap, cutting fabric banding straps …
Scissors don’t do well cutting flashing tape though. While they will cut tapes, the adhesive gunks up the scissor blades.
I’ve been called all sorts of things for using scissors on job sites so if you decide to add scissors to your kit, get ready for naysayer comments.

How about the Olfa Heavy-Duty Rolled Materials Cutter? It was recently highlighted in FHB.
The OLFA works very well. There are other specialty cutters that work as well.

Mike - love your tips. You'll be safer with scissors in place of a knife but it will make no difference at all if you fall off the roof! Where is your FALL PROTECTION EQUIPMENT!!????
The tip makes all kinds of sense, but are all the women builders or just fans of Mike?
