As I write this blog post, we here in the Northeast are undergoing an intense heat wave, causing folks to look for ways to beat that heat. This classic Maine summer cottage, built in the early 1900s, gives a good illustration of how to do just that. Cantilevered over the water, its screened porch and deck offer a delightful solution to the dog days of summer heat. The screened porch is a great place to escape the insects and rain while still enjoying the outdoors, and when you step through the door, there is a spacious deck to stretch out on and enjoy the sun. Today, building codes would prohibit building so close to the water, but these fortunate homeowners can still enjoy the pleasure of their screened porch built years before those codes existed.

Prescriptive codes don't address the connection at less common angles, so base the connection off more typical ones using bolts, structural screws, blocking, and steel tension ties.
