A couple of weeks ago in my blog, I featured a remarkable fireplace on Martha’s Vineyard by stone artist Lew French. Today’s blog looks at another incredible fireplace, this one in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., at the renowned artists retreat, Yaddo. Built in 1893 as a home for financier and businessman Spencer Trask and his artistic wife, Katrina, the family had suffered terrible tragedy when they lost their three children to illness, only to be followed up a short time later by a fire which destroyed their house. The decision to rebuild a new home from the ashes of their lives is reflected in this beautiful fireplace mantel, designed and installed by Tiffany Glass and Decorating Company. The glass mosaic tile phoenix rising from the ashes symbolizes the determination of the Trasks to rebuild their lives. Today Yaddo remains as a monument to their dreams and courage. Some of the most esteemed artists, writers, and musicians have come to Yaddo for focused time on their work and to have a place for reflection and quiet.
