One of the earliest assignments of my career was to shoot this repurposed barn on the island of North Haven, Maine. The barn had been converted into a living space and an important part of the assignment was to illustrate that it had previously been a barn and was now a house. This was a challenge because it was dark inside and very difficult to light. I decided to try shooting at dusk when the contrast was reduced and the outside wouldn’t get overexposed. Of course in the digital age it would have been easy to shoot in high dynamic range and just blend the outside with the interior, but digital shooting was still years away so this was shot on 4×5 transparency film. A long exposure was made and I was pleased with the results. The beautiful structure of the barn was highlighted and the space was warm and inviting. I learned a very important lesson in controlling light that day, which I’ve used ever since.
