Built-in Cabinet Effortlessly Converts from Desk to Bed
This custom Murphy Bed built by trim carpenter Nathan Rinne allows a spare bedroom to conveniently double as an office.
A counterbalanced lift mechanism, rotating desk hardware, and folding steel legs allow this custom desk to convert to a bed with very little effort. The special hinges keep the desktop perfectly level throughout the entire range of motion, allowing you to easily switch between desk and bed mode without removing any objects from the surface.

After installing the new bed/desk combo, trim carpenter Nathan Rinne put his drink down on the desk before he opened the bed and didn’t spill a drop!
Nathan was inspired to create this custom piece of furniture after seeing a similar bed in a video on FineHomebuilding.com. He tracked down the hardware kit from a company called Hiddenbed USA and got to work. You can order a complete build kit with precut plywood parts, but Nathan chose to build the cases himself to ensure that he got a good fit against the uneven walls in his clients’ house.
