Behind the Build: Stately Shingle-Style Home in Salt Lake City, Utah
Builder Tom Fox explains how striking a balance between form and function was the key to making this classically styled house beautiful and comfortable.
Builder and Fine Homebuilding ambassador John Hourihan tours an elegant country home with Tom Fox of Fox Group Construction in Salt Lake City, Utah. This is Tom’s family home, and he talks about how he and his wife Cara identified elements that they loved from all of the classic, traditional styles of American homes and creatively combined them to create the place where they wanted to raise their family. A good deal of inspiration came from the grand old shingle-style homes on the east end of Long Island.
As they make their way through the house, John’s observations confirm in person what he noticed during years of following Tom’s company on social media: that the Fox Group’s work is all about attention to detail in the homes that they build and remodel. Throughout this spacious house, it’s clear that Tom put great care into getting the proportions and the placement of doors and windows right to make every room feel cozy and inviting.

Fine Homebuilding - absolutely love these Behind the Build segments - I get to 'meet' great people that I otherwise would not. As an interior designer with a passion for architecture it's so wonderful meeting people, craftsmen and builders that share that same passion and have an eye for detail and the skill set to make it happen. Great job Tom Fox Group - this one stole my heart ♥
Sure is a huge pile of painted wood, both inside and out. You just built yourself a long term, expensive maintenance project. There will come a time when top notch paint jobs will exceed the cost to construct it.
