Get Sunlight Where You Want It With Solar Tubes
VELUX’s sun tunnels help you bring natural light into rooms where windows are not an option.
Bringing sunlight into a home can help create a sense of comfort that artificial lighting simply cannot. But there are areas in the center of a home, often a bathroom or a laundry room, where installing windows is just not possible. Solar tubes offer a great way to bring natural lighting to these interior spaces by creating a path for sunlight that travels from the roof and through the ceiling below into a designated room. The inside of the tube is lined with reflective material that helps amplify natural light without any color shift.
One such solar tube option on the market is Velux’s Sun Tunnel Skylights, which are available with either rigid or flexible tubes in a handful of sizes and variations. The flexible sun tunnels offer a path for installation around obstacles that might be in the attic space, while rigid sun tunnels work best with an unobstructed path from roof to ceiling.
Installation is straightforward: go into the attic to check rafter locations, take measurements, and mark where the ceiling and roof holes will go. Then, cut a hole in the roof to install the top collar, the upper part of the tunnel, lens, and flashing. Once you’re done on the roof, cut the hole in the ceiling and install the lower portion of the tunnel to connect the two openings. Seal the tunnel seams and install the diffuser and trim ring.
Velux sun tunnel skylights are offered in 10 in. and 14 in. Prices start at about $250 for the product and go up to $650 depending on size and length of installation. Velux also offers installation via certified installers. You can find more information, including locations of dealers and installers, at veluxusa.com.
