Durable Softwood for Decking and Cladding
Kebony’s wood-modfication method makes softwood a viable alternative to hardwood for exterior surfaces.
Kebony is a company that specializes in a wood-modification process that takes softwood and turns it into a durable option for decking and cladding. The Norway-based company is making a unique alternative to tropical hardwoods with its FSC-certified softwood product.
The wood-modification process consists of taking the softwood and soaking it in furfuryl alcholol (produced from a bio-based liquid). After that, the wood is heated, and the alcohol turns into a polymer that is stable and will not disintegrate or leach out of the wood. This permanent transformation increases the wood cell wall thickness by 50%, and includes no toxins or chemicals, according to the manufacturer. Kebony also says the wood doesn’t splinter and can keep cool in high temperatures. Basically, the process turns the softwood into a product that behaves like tropical hardwood.
Kebony decking is available in a clear grade, while cladding comes in both clear and character grade. Clear, which is produced from pinus radiata from New Zealand, features a smooth and even appearance. Character, which is produced from Scotts pine in Scandanavia, includes knots. Kebony woods have a dark-brown hue that eventually turns into a silver-gray patina over time.
The decking is offered in 5/4 x 6 in. and in lengths of 10 ft., 12 ft., 14 ft., and 16 ft. (the outer board is only offered in lengths of 14 ft.) Deck boards come premilled for hidden fasteners. Cladding is also offered in 1×6 in. and comes in lengths of 10 ft., 12 ft., 14 ft., and 16 ft. For more commercial applications, Kebony also offers its boardwalk product, which comes in 2 x 6 in.
