I really enjoyed your Aftershow #531 ADU podcast. We live in a rural community, zoned agricultural, but 20 years ago couldn't build an ADU due to zoning. We had to build an "addition" with either no kitchen or no bedroom, and it had to have a door into the main house for out elderly parents. We fudged a bit after occupancy to make a kitchenette. Fast forward 18 years and ADU's are now possible so we remodeled it for ourselves and gave the main house to our daughter. We all share the work and care of the animals and property yet have our own privacy when needed. It's been a great solution for everyone.
