Pencil-Compass Combo
An off-center graphite core is the secret to this dual pencil and scribing tool.
Most carpenters will occasionally need to scribe a surface of some kind in order to mate two materials with dissimilar surfaces, but unless you spend your entire day installing cabinets or countertops, it’s unlikely you carry a compass in your pouch. But if you are someone who carries a carpenter’s pencil, then one simple upgrade could prepare you for scribing at a moment’s notice. The HandyScribe carpenter’s pencil has an offset graphite core in an oval shaped pencil, which allows it to act as both a regular pencil and as a cam-action scribing tool. Just rotate the pencil to change the distance from the surface you are scribing. Expect to see the HandyScribe in box stores soon, but for now you can buy a 10-pack for $12 at handyscribe.com.
