What’s Old Is New — An Exciting Announcement
Fine Homebuilding's editorial director has some fun news to share.
I’ve been a magazine junkie since I was a kid, so landing a job at Fine Homebuilding was a dream come true—not just because I get to work on our own articles, but because the office was always full of other magazines to dive into. That’s where I discovered Old House Journal, a magazine I immediately came to admire. Like FHB, it’s all about houses. And like FHB, OHJ is a magazine made by passionate editors for an equally passionate audience.
Now, Old House Journal is part of the same family as FHB under Active Interest Media, and I couldn’t be more excited about what this means for all of us. We’ve teamed up with editor-in-chief Patricia Poore and the OHJ team to create a new section of our website. It’s filled with practical advice, resources, and inspiration on restoration, preservation, design, and materials, all focused on old houses.
Preserving History
We’ve learned just how many of you love, live in, and work on old homes. That’s why we’re also launching a new department in FHB called The Restorationist. This department will be spearheaded by former FHB editor and podcast host Justin Fink. Justin has spent almost two decades remodeling old homes in Connecticut.
When he launched his business, Fink & Son Historic Restoration, in 2020, he zeroed in on historic preservation. Justin is obsessed with old houses, and in every issue he’ll share his expertise. His first column, on restoring vintage hardware, can be found on pp. 74–76 of the upcoming issue, #329.
Let’s Get Down to Business
That’s not all that’s new. We’ve also heard from many of you that while fitting tight miter joints or commissioning a new AC compressor is difficult, running a business has been one of the toughest jobs. So we’ve partnered with the folks at HELM Construction Solutions to bring you another new department: Building Business.
The HELM team specializes in consulting, project management, training, and education, and helps design and building professionals across the country succeed not only in their craft, but in their business. Find their first column, appropriately focused on launching a building business, on pp. 78–80 of the upcoming issue.
We are thrilled to be working with Patty, Justin, and the Helm team to bring you useful and inspiring information, whether you restore old houses or build new ones. Visit the Old House Journal section of our website, check out the new departments, and keep telling us how were doing: email [email protected].
