Sturdier Pocket-Door Walls
These plywood clips allow you to strengthen the walls around pocket doors to support shelves, cabinets, and other fixtures.
Pocket doors are a great way to free up both floor and wall space. One downside to pocket doors, though, has always been that the walls on either side of the door cavity are not sturdy enough to hang cabinets, shelves, or even towel racks. To remedy this situation, Johnson Hardware offers the 1515-PLY Pocket Door Frame Plywood Clips.
The clips are an elegantly simple solution that allows you to reinforce the cavity walls with plywood. Here’s how they work: You simply cut 19/32-in. plywood to fit between the studs, attach the clips to the plywood, and then attach the plywood to the studs. Johnson claims this makes the walls up to three times stronger. The 1515-PLY Pocket Door Frame Plywood Clip Set can be used on 2×4 or 2×6 stud walls, and a set designed for doors up to 36 in. costs under $30 online and at retailers that carry other Johnson products.
