FHB Podcast Segment: Insulating the Roof of a Small Balloon-Framed House
The FHB Podcast crew offers expert advice on choosing the right insulation for the roof of a small, balloon-framed home.
In episode 668 of the Fine Homebuilding Podcast, listener Sam writes in for advice on insulating the roof of a small 1940s balloon-framed house on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. He wants to create additional space for conditioned storage by finishing the small third-floor attic and installing a ducted condenser unit that can also run ducts to smaller rooms on the second floor.
The ceiling joists are rough-sawn true 2x6s, but there is very limited ceiling space and the size of the attic will be reduced even further by added kneewalls and collar ties. Sam isn’t sure if he should insulate with spray foam (open or closed cell), batts, or something else. The podcast crew weighs in.
