Born in Chicago, Bede Van Dyke lived as a child in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Houston, Texas. After earning his architecture degree from the University of Houston and working with several Houston architects, he spent 2-1/2 years in Taos, N.M., building with adobe and mud. Bede moved to Michigan in 1975, initially teaching design, art, and architecture before joining furniture maker Herman Miller.
