Kit Camp spent his childhood wrecking his father’s tool collection, and the desire to build things with tools and wood followed him through college. A gift subscription to FWW in the early 1990s led him to James Krenov’s writings and to the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding, where he learned to work wood with hand tools. This led to two years building boats, and then to a year studying with Krenov at College of the Redwoods. After four years teaching hand-tool woodworking to children, Camp has worked as a finish carpenter and cabinetmaker in San Diego since 2005. He still teaches woodworking to kids. “It’s loud, chaotic, and real,” he says. “The kids appreciate the trust I put in them when I hand them tools. For nearly all of them it’s a totally new experience, so they have a blast and so do I.”
