My half inch drill is shot. I’m thinking of a milwaukee replacement. There’s two models I’m considering:
The 0302-20 has an 8 amp motor, double gear reduction and is a pistol grip.
The 1007-1 is 7 amp motor, triple gear reduction and is a D-handle style.
Which of these will be better for ship auger bits and hole saws?

I have used both of them. I have the d handle model. I prefer it for larger bits. Always use the side handle because it could rip your arm off.
My buddy is an electrician and he gave me an 8 amp (the reverse had gone bad after 8 years of hard use) I got the switch replaced, and I love the drill. It chugs through everything. It has gobs of torque, and I am real careful to use it only when I have good footing and grip, so it won't take out your wrists!
Bought the pistol grip model just a month ago to drill locksets and deadbolts in solid core extterior doors. A sweet tool, smooth, and I loved the one-handed chuck.
Do you feel the adjustable handle gives you enough control, rock solid, no slip?

No problem. All the control I needed while boring 2 1/8" holes with a Forstner bit. Also use it to stir DW mud. And did I say hpw much I liked the one-handed chuck?
I never met a tool I didn't like!
Hi,
FWIW I use the 0234 with the right angle kit. Even though it's "only" a 5.5A unit I have driven 1.25" ship augers on a 2' extension thru 3' of wood! I just configure it in LO speed mode (on the rt angle unit). For what I do I like the versatility of that kit and if your augers are 1.25 or less it might be an option. I also like to attach the handle turned opposite the pistol grip - sorta like a "T" - gives more control.
i have a mil. smaller drill that has always been a dissapointment, so i wasn't to sold on there drills. i had a old b&d holegun that i always used when the drilling got tough. well after 15 yrs it bit the dust while needing to drill about 75 1 1/4 holes one day. i was in a bind so i ran down to the local pawn shop and the only decent drill they had was a mil. 1/2 so i bought it and grumbled all the way back to the job about losing my b&d and how a guy couldn't buy a drill with that much power. well i got back and this mil. was mean, you ask how mean.... when i got done i gave it to a friend of mine because i was afraid i was going to break a wrist when it would hang that bit up. i know i'm just a wus but that drill scared me!it would pick you up off the floor andspin you like a rubber noodle. anyway buy 1 but be sure and keep the side handle on it.larry
I don't have either one of these, but -
The one I have has triple reduction gears. I like the slower speed/more power on big stuff.

have you considered one of the variations of milwaukee's right angle? i think mine is a 3107. depending on how you attach the right angle head (which depends on what you're drilling and how big a hole you're making, of course) it runs at 333rpm or 750rpm. without the right angle head it makes one heck of a 500rpm, D-handle. (WARNING: Use the accessory second handles- it's a powerful wrist-wrenching SOB if it binds up!)

I had no idea you could use the RAs for anything other than RA. Additional capability for a little extra cost is something I'll consider. Thanks for the post.
The 3300-1 looks like a all around low end compromise.

yeah, they're pretty versatile. depending on which end of the rt angle elbow you attach to the drill body, it reverses the gearing and gives different speeds, or you can just leave the rt angle attachment off entirely, screw the chuck straight to the motor shaft and have a regular single speed drill. the milwaukees come with two second handles, so you have one that works with either configuration.
amazon usually has factory reconditioned ones for about $180 or so.

Mitch,
To add to what you said about the Milwaukee RAD, I have a friend who has one that is variable speed, which gives better control starting large bits. The Hawg is not available VS, as far as I know, and neither is the DW 124, which I have, and would love in VS mode.

I love my milwaukee hoe hawg. Ive got several old porter cables (they used to be good)...haven't seen them for a long long time..
They're around somewhere.

the price of the D handle gets to Hole Hawg territory which has great versatility and of course incredible torque
