I thought this months Professional Remodeler magazine had two really good valuable articles in it this month.
Accessibility, Accountability, Autonomy
101 Best Companies to Work For. As I mentioned elsewhere just the other day having been graced with the opportunity to build or be part of building a lot of great stuff in my career a while ago I picked a new gola and target which was to build a great company. Not an easy task at all. Unlike the results of our craftwork where you can say this tool or that techniques resulted in a great cabinet, handrail, or framing job it a lot harder to put your finger on managment techniques that work so I thought reading about some of the things that these best companies (these employers of choice”) was incredibly interesting and informative.
So I was wondering does anyone here work for any of thes companies or know of anyone who has?
The other article that I thought was interesting and this might because I really like knowing the business numbers is: Benchmark Your Business Results New information from Professional Remodeler’s 2003 survey provides a remodeling industry report card.

Great article Jerrald.
Thanks for the heads-up.
I printed a copy to bring to my upcoming review.
I would LOVE to see my employer make the list!
Time will tell.

Do not try this at home!

Your welcome T. Regrading: "I would LOVE to see my employer make the list!" In a similar vain I would like to see my company one day make that list too. One of the companies on the list is a fellow I "cyber-knew" from the online world in that he used to participate in the old Remodeling magazine forums back in the 90's. Dennis Gehman of
Gehman Custom Builder/Harleysville, Pa. he one of the really small ones at only $1.8 million, 18 employees, and 13 years in business which is just a few more years than me so it give me something to look up to. What I think his example shows is that you don't have to be big to do it right. He always struck me as one of the smarter more well spoken forum participants back there back then. (This was long before Breaktime was such a big deal player).

Thank you Jerrrald, a new site for my "favorites/Learning Centers"folder.
It took me 2 hours to browse the site and download about 10MB for my reference folders. . . Love you, man.

SamT-'Thank you Jerrrald, a new site for my "favorites/Learning Centers"folder." Do you mean the Housing Zone site? That's always been one of my favorites for pure business related information. You should subscribe to their email news letters. That's one of my key ways of keeping up on things. They have one for Remodelers (Nov 5th sample issue) and one tailored more towards Builders (Nov 5th sample issue). I'm sort of surprised you hadn't seen it before. You should try poking around through this list too Websites for Builders & Remodelers and feel free to suggest new ones for that list too.

Jerry-
K. Hovnanian made the list. They're a massive tract-building machine based here in NJ, and we're currently building their new corporate HQ- about a $40 million project by the time it's done.
As I come to find out more about them, they truly are unique- they value the sub-GC relationship, use cutting-edge technology in the office and field, and seem to really care about their customers. More than can be said about many companies in this industry.
Bob
Yup I've been reading and hearing about Hovnanian for years and not just in building trade magazines.
"As I come to find out more about them, they truly are unique- they value the sub-GC relationship, use cutting-edge technology in the office and field, and seem to really care about their customers." Hmmmnn maybe there is something we can learn from them. Can you think of anybody we know that should try and learn something from them?? View Image :-J
