Hey fellas,
Sorry I didn’t get back to you all sooner. Wanted to give you and update on my “dodecagon”.
It took me awhile to absorb all the information generated by the previous post, all greatly appreciated. Thanks to Joe, Ken, Devil, Brisket, Jack, et al. and the Roof Framers Bible, we put the bones of the roof up in about two hours today. It went great. Let me tell we did it.
Once the walls were up, 10’ff, 9’sf, and about 6′ of third floor, I was able to pad up the top plate so that 9 of the 12 segments would be above the existing 9/12 roof plane that we were framing into. Previously, I had assembled a king post of 2x fir 1-1/2″ on a side for 12 sides, the appropriate length, glued up with p/u glue. Next I took final measurements and using the roof framers bible, I cut four hips with the appropriate overhang. Then I cut a common, and laid everything out on the deck to see that things worket out and to cut a prop for under the king post. Time to put it up!
We stood two hips and the kingpost, and then placed two more at 90 degree andgles. Every thing looks good. Now we keep placing the hips while cheching to see that the commons (2 per side 16″ o.c.) will work. Next we cut header blocks to fit from hip to hip to receive the commons ( I just scribed them in as the math seemed too complex!) I had previously determinged the fascia board length from the tan x 15 degree x diameter equation and we nailed them on, they all fit perfect. It really went smooth!
I only started my figuring after lunch, and it was 2:30 till we started nailing rafters up, but I still made it to my hockey game at 5:30! Not to shabby, eh? We still have to sheet and frame porches below, but it will be a piece of cake now, thanks to all of you.
I really want to post some pics, I’m gonna take some digital ones tomorrow, but I don’t know how to post them. Maybe Joe the resident expert will enlighten me.
Thanks again,
Tom
