16/4 Black Walnut

Snort | Posted in General Discussion on August 8, 2008 04:45am

I’ve got a client that would like a 4′ x 10′ dining room table top made up of solid 3-4″ thick x 12″ black walnut. The sources I normally use around Chapel Hill, NC. only have 4″ x 4″ stuff, and are telling me I may have to wait 5-6 months to special order the 12″ planks. Does anybody know a supplier they wouldn’t mind passing along?

Thanks,

Snort

Now you see this one-eyed midget Shouting the word “NOW” And you say, “For what reason?” And he says, “How?” And you say, “What does this mean?” And he screams back, “You’re a cow Give me some milk Or else go home”

I'm sorry my sources have committed all of their black walnut for export.  You might try Groof and Groof at 1 800 342 0001  They've provided black walnut at something like 54 inches wide

I have a large slab thats been sitting her for some time now. 10-12' long 3-4" thick about 16" wide.
    Shipping would be tough though.

That's a 600 lb top.  Does it really need to be 3-4" thick throughout or just look like it is that thick?  You could use 8/4 stock, finish it to around 1 3/4 inches thick and add a layer to the perimeter to give it the hefty look.

Can you make it out of 7/16" osb and give it a nice walnut stain and fool them?

That'll never work. But maybe you could lam a whole bunch together till it's four inches thick. 600 pounds of oriented strand walnut.Scott.Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.”

These are the people I use.http://www.hardwoodbarn.com/inventory.htmThere are a coupla good foresters that supply them with crazy sizes all the time already dried too. The owners are a bunch of retired craftsmen that still love wood. They even have a old whiskey barrel maker from Kentucky.I would think it would take longer than 5-6 months to air dry 16/4 walnut.Where there's a will, there are 500 relatives

        1. Snort | Aug 09, 2008 02:30pm | #35

I'd like to get it kiln dried, the 3-4 years for air drying might queer the deal. And thanks for the link, I can find wood coast to coast now. Now you see this one-eyed midget

Gonna be really tough to get 16/4 walnut, period.

Ask over at Knots?  There's probably dealers in the midwest who might have walnut that big, and I recall seeing an ad in Fine Woodworking about a dealer in CA that specialized in big walnut.

Edit:  There's an ad on Woodweb for 16/4 New York black walnut, up to 22" wide.  Posted on 7/30.  Guy's in Florida.

Also - http://www.gobywalnut.com.  In Oregon. They have some slabs that exceed your dimensions of 48 x 120 as a single piece.

I agree with JonE.  Gonnna be tough to find.  There was a fellow a while back on Knots posting about some amazing Walnut finds, so you might want to check there too. I suppose laminated 8/4 is out of the question.  Have you thought about promoting a Veneered surface?  You could build em an amazing burl or crotch walnut veneered table that would blow away anything they have ever seen.  Yes, they would need to get over the fact that it is a veneer. You could promote this as being more enviornmental friendly.  The core could be laminated walnut if they are dead set on solid, but MDF would be more stable and flatter.  If you do consider a veneer send em to Certainly wood's site.

For the 16/4 you might want to give Bohlke (link below) a call as they specialize in speciality items and high end products.

    Good luck

I may try the veneer if I run into a dead end on the planks... I'll try your link, though. Now you see this one-eyed midget

There are plenty of large slabs of walnut out there.. I've got a lot of them myself but they all have homes..

I love working with walnut.  like nothing else was smooth and as nicely.  However expect to have your hands turn color from handling it..  A nice purple..

But when you work it you must get a really sharp hand plane and plane it.. Nothing is as sweet.

He's got 4x4s in stock, which, in the big price picture may be the way we go... he'd be hard pressed to get anything bigger. Capitol can get the wider stuff, but at a much wider price, too<G> Now you see this one-eyed midget

I know a guy that's sitting with 2 or three pieces of walnut that's probably 12/4's but I'd guess they are 22 to 24" wide by 12' long. He's had em for as long as I can remember going there to buy wood, I think they're still for sale but I have no idea how much $$$. I'm sure there cheap.

I have inquired about them but he always tells me that we will talk $ when I'm serious about buying them, never been serious enough to further the conversation! I have about 2000 bd ft of walnut air drying but nothing in those dimensions.

You could try Gennett Lumber in Asheville, and maybe Franklin woodwarehouse in Franklin..both always had a pretty good selection of stuff.

In my exp, most kilns won't tackle anything over 10-12/4 due to stressing and checking issues..it has to be a steam injection kiln, not a dry kiln.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
